PHOENIX - The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement (the Foundation) awarded the Cartwright School District as the inaugural recipient of the Thiru Family Trust Momentum Maker Grant. The district is set to receive $75,000 in resources to directly address mental health and well-being challenges for students, teachers, and staff at their schools.
The Thiru Family Trust Momentum Maker Grant is multi-dimensional and includes:

Located in the heart of Maryvale, Cartwright School District serves 14,000 students from PreK-8thgrade across 20 schools. The district hopes to utilize the Thiru Family Trust Momentum Maker Grant to continue its efforts to prioritize mental health support for its students and employees. The district is committed to ensuring all learning spaces within their schools produce both a real and a felt sense of safety and belonging.

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement (the Foundation) announces its final discretionary grant opportunity of the year for organizations addressing Arizona’s most critical health challenges: mental health, substance use disorder, chronic health conditions, and health equity.
“Through the Foundation, we’ve been able to impact programs and projects that bring together partners from multiple sectors to meet evolving community needs and create opportunities to enhance the health of Arizonans,” said Dr. Christine Bracamonte Wiggs, Foundation President and Board Chair. “There are so many organizations around the state doing important work to improve health, and we hope to continue to uplift them and be part of their success.”
The Foundation is accepting applications from Aug. 21 until Sept. 15, 2023, at 4 p.m. MST. Funding priority is given to proposals that expand publicly available resources, are scalable (or have the potential to increase systems-level capacity) and have a measurable impact. The grant term is one year, with a funding date of Nov. 30, 2023.

Grants available to Arizona minority students on GED and post-secondary tracks
SCOTTSDALE, AZ – For the fourth consecutive year, the Fiesta Bowl Organization and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona have partnered to present the Empowering Diversity Scholarship in a continued effort to support Arizona minority residents’ educational goals.
As part of the commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion, the Empowering Diversity Scholarship presented by Fiesta Bowl and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona has awarded 66 Arizonans a total of $259,000 through grants in its first three years for candidates to pursue their GED or post-secondary aspirations.
This year’s application period starts today, March 20, and runs through Monday, April 10 at 11:59 pm MST. The recipients will be announced on Wednesday, June 14. Once again, the Empowering Diversity Scholarship will have two tracks for individuals living in Arizona to apply.
The GED (general education development) track is open to applicants who are an Arizona resident, a minority and at least 16 years of age that have not graduated from an accredited high school or received a high school equivalency certificate or diploma and are not currently enrolled in a high school or college. The $500 scholarship will cover fees associated with the GED assessment and additional program support services provided by College Depot.
The post-secondary track is open to minority students living in Arizona who are in their senior year of high school or currently attending an Arizona post-secondary institution. Recipients, who must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, will be awarded a one-time $5,000 scholarship with additional support services provided by Be A Leader Foundation or College Success Arizona for their pursuit of higher education.
“The Empowering Diversity Scholarship has proven to be an effective tool for the advancement of the educational goals of Arizonans across the state,” said Erik Moses, Fiesta Bowl Executive Director & CEO. “Our continued partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona on this initiative is integral in helping underrepresented populations pursue their dreams through the power of educational attainment. Many scholarship recipients would be at risk of having their educational journeys halted prematurely without this scholarship.”
The goal of the Empowering Diversity Scholarship is to continue to help the upward trend of enrollment of historically underrepresented populations, while also aiding students in their pursuit of higher education. According to the Arizona Board of Regents, enrollment of historically underrepresented populations saw a 3.2 percent increase in the fall of 2022 from the previous fall. The continuous enrollment growth at Arizona’s three public universities is up 24.5 percent from fall 2018.
Since its inception, the Empowering Diversity Scholarship has assisted Arizona minority students with their educational goals. Recipients have attended post-secondary institutions across the state of Arizona, including Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, Grand Canyon University, Coconino Community College, Chandler-Gilbert Community College and Cochise Community College.

Scholarships Awarded to 15 Postsecondary and 10 GED Recipients for 2023-24; Four-year Program Total is $351,500 to Nearly 100 Students
SCOTTSDALE, AZ (June 14, 2023) – A total of 25 Arizona residents earned the Empowering Diversity Scholarship presented by the Fiesta Bowl and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona for the 2023-24 school year to accelerate achieving their educational dreams.
The Fiesta Bowl Organization and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona have partnered to present the Empowering Diversity Scholarship for four years as part of their commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion and to propel members from underrepresented communities in Arizona as they pursue their educational goals.
This year, a total of $92,500 in financial awards was granted to 25 individuals – 15 through the postsecondary track and 10 to those who complete their GED (general education development) credential. The $92,500 brings the Empowering Diversity Scholarship total to $351,500 serving 91 Arizona minority students over the last four years.
“We are grateful to partner with Fiesta Bowl on this scholarship for the fourth consecutive year, said Pam Kehaly, President & CEO at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. “We are working to enhance diversity across the state and giving students the opportunity to reach their educational goals. The Empowering Diversity Scholarship awarded 15 postsecondary students with $5,500 each to help fund their educational pursuits with additional support services provided by Be A Leader Foundation and Education Forward Arizona. In addition, 10 GED recipients each received $1,000 to cover fees associated with the GED assessment and additional program support services provided by College Depot.
All 15 postsecondary recipients will be or are currently attending one of the state’s public four-year institutions: 10 at Arizona State University, four attending the University of Arizona and one at Northern Arizona University. The 25 Empowering Diversity Scholarship awardees are from Maricopa, Yuma and Gila counties.

The 2023 Thiru Family Trust Momentum Maker grant is focused on improving mental health in schools by addressing stress and anxiety faced by Arizona students, teachers, and staff. The Foundation will be accepting applications from July 10 to Aug. 10, 2023.

Nonprofits, educational institutions, and community organizations are encouraged to apply between Feb. 6 and March 6, 2023.

PHOENIX, Ariz – March 1, 2022 – Blue Cross® Blue Shield® of Arizona (BCBSAZ) announces the launch of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement, building upon the work of BCBSAZ’s public health initiative and expanding efforts to tackle the state’s toughest health challenges.
Focusing on mental health, health equity, chronic health conditions, and substance use disorder, the Foundation will work to mobilize, uplift, and advance Arizona’s communities. It will amplify impact through cross-sector partnerships, and by providing grants that support programs and applied research.
The Foundation’s flagship focus is mental health and will commit $5 million over three years to address a wide range of mental health issues. Applications for its first competitive grant will open on March 1, 2022 for programs and/or applied research that target issues such as access – provider shortage, telehealth, suicide prevention, youth mental health, intersection of mental health and substance use disorder, and the COVID-19 effect.
“We’ve always had a strong commitment to improving the health of Arizonans, and the Foundation is the framework that will allow us to take that commitment one step further,” said Dr. Christine Wiggs, President and Board Chair for the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement is awarding more than $1.3 million to 19 organizations throughout Arizona to address mental health. Through these grants, organizations will work to enhance programs and offer services that address access, suicide prevention, youth mental health, the intersection of mental health and substance use disorder and the COVID-19 effect.
