Orchestrating change in mental health by creating a safe space for students and their families
Rosie’s House, a nonprofit music academy in Phoenix, provides free music education to underserved students whose family’s average household income is less than $40,000. Through a variety of programs, Rosie’s House proves that music education is a powerful tool for youth to form their identity, develop valuable academic and life skills, and connect to their community. However, the lingering social effects of COVID-19 became evident in their students in 2023.
Rosie’s House noticed that there is a need beyond creative support for their students and their parents – a mental health need. Recognizing the intensified mental health challenges faced by underserved communities after the pandemic, Rosie’s House embarked on a crucial mission: launching the Mental Health Support Initiative.
Through the Mental Health Support Initiative, funded by the Foundation, Rosie’s House is connecting students and their families to healing-centered support and professional resources that will promote positive mental health and save lives. The power of music in improving mental health is well-documented, and as a trusted community provider, Rosie’s House can further support its students and their families.
The initiative is facilitated by the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence and has become a safe space for students and their parents to engage in open conversations about mental health. These discussions illuminate the often-hidden struggles faced by families, creating opportunities for understanding and empathy.
In addressing mental health challenges, Rosie’s House becomes not just a musical haven but a beacon of support and resilience in every note and conversation.
Funding [from the Foundation] has directly enabled Rosie’s House to create and implement the Mental Health Support Initiative. Without [this] funding, this program would not have been possible.
