Building a Healthier Future: The Role of Nutrition

In Northern Arizona, Creek Valley Health Clinic is an example of how having access to healthy foods and education can make a positive impact on the nutrition and chronic health conditions affecting many Arizonans. Through support from the Foundation, Creek Valley Health Clinic expanded its Strengthening Nutrition and Activity in Our Connected Community (SNACC) program, leading to positive changes for residents, including children.

The SNACC program focuses on the community and aims to improve health outcomes by addressing nutrition, education, and access to healthy foods, working to prevent chronic health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. The program empowers clients with education and resources to make healthier food choices. Future plans include expanding nutrition coaching, providing community classes, and providing food vouchers for an additional 250 Arizonans.

The impact is clear – a regular client managing diabetes and hypertension saw significant improvements through the program, including consistent follow-up visits, medication, and participation in cooking classes. The positive influence also reached children as young as five, who benefited from “Bee’s Bucks,” a $5 coupon for fruits and vegetables at the local grocery store.

It’s just such a natural, organic way to talk about the value of healthy eating and get a child’s mind focused on the produce department and not the candy aisle. It’s a cultural shift.
